Teacup Beagle
The Teacup Beagle is also referred to as the Miniature or Pocket Beagle. Although this is not a recognized breed, these little dogs are increasingly popular around the world. These dogs have an appearance very similar to that of their standard relatives, but they are much smaller, standing 7-12 inches high at the withers. Teacup Beagles are believed by some to be direct offspring of the Old English Pocket Beagle, but most probably, they have been recreated by way of selective breeding.
Teacup Beagles are sweet and lovely companions, enjoying all sorts of interaction, and not imagining their lives without a company. They retain their exceptional sense of smell, and could well be used in hunting hare, rabbit and other game. Because of their size, they are slower than standard Beagles, but they are very adept at ground tracking, where speed is not crucial. It is not easy to distract a Teacup Beagle from a smell if he catches one, so these dogs should not be walked without a lead.
Teacup Beagles have the same pleading facial expression as standard Beagles. Coat colors include all hound-type patterns, such as bi-color, tri-color, bluetick, etc. These dogs have a smooth, slightly rough coat, which does not require grooming. These dogs should not be bathed too frequently, because this may lead to dry skin. Teacup Beagles do okay indoors, but daily rigorous exercise in the open air is an absolute must for these dogs.
Beagles love to play with children, and they tend to get on well with other dogs, primarily with those of the same or related breeds. Teacup Beagles, like standard Beagles, become extremely noisy if bored or neglected. They have a characteristic baying voice, which can be a sheer trouble for neighbors. On the other hand, this voice is one of their trademark features, as they were originally supposed to use it on hunting trips to signal the presence of game in close vicinity.
Although Beagles are generally healthy, some lines can be affected with some hereditary diseases, such as chondroplasia, spinal problems, cardiovascular diseases, eye problems and dwarfism. Some dogs are susceptible to epilepsy. Purebred dogs are not usually affected by these diseases, so this is just one more reason for you to purchase dogs only from reputable breeders. Healthy Teacup Beagles have a lifespan of 12-14 years.
