These hounds make excellent playing companions for children, but smaller kids should be supervised. A habit to chew on everything when playing may frighten a child. These hunting hounds are small, sturdy and athletic. They have a short coat, which is easy to take care of. Generally good-natured, they do well with other animals in the house. They are friendly with people. The hounds strive for vigorous exercises and various outdoor activities. Training should be started quite early. These dogs have an independent mind and are somewhat stubborn at times. An owner should be very careful about hunting instincts of the dog. When the dog catches an interesting scent, it tends to turn deaf to calls. Hunting instincts, such as chewing, barking and following scents, can be trained out of these dogs with firm and consistent training.
