This breed is very ancient, dating back to 40 B.C. these dogs came to England with Romans around 200 B.C. The name of the breed came from the Celtic word “beag,” which means small. There is another theory of the word’s origin. It could have stemmed from the French word “begle” that stands for “of little value.” In appearance, these scenting hounds resemble foxhounds in miniature. The original purpose of the breed is hunting hare, rabbits, pheasant and quail following the prey by scent.
