If you purchase an AKC Beagle, or a Beagle type recognized by any other world-famous and trustworthy Beagle breed club, you will minimize the risk of disappointment that might have arisen had you purchased a so called Pocket Beagle from a buck-oriented “puppy mill”. Beagles are healthy dogs, as breeders have done their utmost to improve the breed’s gene.

AKC Beagles include two types of dogs, which differ according to wither height: dogs measuring 13 inches tall at the shoulder or smaller; and dogs not standing taller than 15 inches high at the withers. Both Beagle types enjoy great popularity among dog lovers. Small Beagles tend to be more active than large varieties.

Beagles are but the most vivacious dogs in the world. They are not supposed to be vicious or overly suspicious of strangers. Beagles have a smooth medium length coat, which comes in bi-colors, tri-colors, and many other color combinations. Beagles have a cute, intelligent and pleading facial expression. They are sturdy and robust, bearing some resemblance to Foxhounds, their genetic relatives. However, they have shorter legs, and their head is formed differently. Beagles were originally bred for hunting hare, rabbit and other ground animals. Hunters relied on the dog’s keen nose and ability to pre-calculate the moves of wild animals across the terrain. Beagles are capable of signaling the success in hunting by giving a characteristic “baying” howl. Their white-tipped tails make them easy to detect in thickets. If you want your Beagle to fully live up to these characteristics, buy only AKC Beagles and do not take anyone’s intriguing stories about Pocket Beagles “dating back from the days of Queen Elisabeth” seriously.
