Beagles Puppy - Introduction and History

The word 'beagle' is from the Celtic word 'beag', which means 'small'. There is another version, which states the name came from the French word 'begueule', and stands for 'gape throat'. The dog, we refer nowadays to as the 'Beagle', developed in the mid-1800s at the kennel of Parson Honeywood, England.

There was also a breed in America, also called the Beagle, however in the second half of the 19th century Americans started importing English Beagles. This division eventually resulted in the appearance of two breed standards, which defined the height limits for the dog: 13 inches and 13 to 15 inches. The American Beagle Club emerged in 1888.

Nowadays, Beagles are among the most admirable and funny dogs. They are wonderful family companions, and they get on perfectly well with other animals and guests. They are forgiving about occasional rough treatment. Beagles take part in hunting sports, confirmation shows, field trials and bench shows.
